As responsable citizens we all try to do our part in controlling our usage and cutting down on waste.
One way that we can help the cause is to properly use our appliances, in this instance, namely our dishwashers. 
When the meal is done and you are in the clean up stage it is more economical if you scrape excess food left on the plate into the waste disposer or trash bag before it goes to the compost pile and load dishes directly in the dishwasher. Do not pre rinse dishes before you load them into the dishwasher. By pre rinsing your dishes in the sink you can lose approximately 20 gallons or more just in rinsing before loading. The rinse only setting on the dishwasher uses one gallon of water and grindes any small food residue before sending it to the drain all within a short five minute cycle. After two or three meals when the dishwasher has become fully loaded, then you can add your automatic dishwasher soap and run a light or normal wash cycle which uses approximately four gallons of water. 
Several tips to get sparkling and clear dishes and glassware are proper choice of dish soap, proper amount of soap, making sure your hot water has reached your dishwasher when it fills, making sure your dishwasher has ample amount of rinse agent or jet dry in the dispenser, properly loading the racks to prevent utensils from nesting and dishes from blocking the spray arms Another good idea is using vinegar or citric acid to protect against hard water and minerals from building up. ]]>
